Career mode has eight different characters to choose from, and each character has a choice of four cars with different strengths – strong on drifting, acceleration, top speed, or an all-rounder. There are aesthetic customizations for your driver and cars that can be purchased with in-game currency earned by competing, but these add-ons are often so subtle that they are hard to spot while you are racing. As mentioned before, the unlockable aesthetic add-ons do not do enough to individualize the cars.There are multiple views to select from, including a cockpit view and an over-the-hood perspective. There is a green meter in the lower-right portion of the screen that fills up as you pull off clean maneuvers and earn up to four boosts. The two more imaginative modes are fun to mess around with but do not have much staying power without unique unlockables or goals to chase.In Time Trial you can choose any course and race against the default AI ghost, or you can download that track’s leaderboard to take on the very best from across the network. Throughout each drift you leave behind tire marks and kick up a sizable cloud of smoke. The sim people can have their sim racing and the arcade people can have their arcade racing and everyone is happy.Yeah, I think I need this. It really takes away from what has the potential to be the highlight of the game.Gamer since the NES days, Boilermaker, Colts and Pacers fan. As a modern time capsule, Hotshot Racing nails it. All of these cues are immediately comprehensible and soon feel like second nature on the track.Most of the cars approximate the look of a real-world car that has been put through a retro filter. Computer opponents seem to shift into a higher gear as they cross the start line for the final lap. This punishment effectively raises the stakes of each race and makes it even more rewarding to effectively navigate a turn.There are eight playable drivers, each with four cars to choose from. Conversely, completing the career requires victory on sixteen circuits, each at three difficulty levels, and without the ability to pimp my jalopy I wasn’t particularly inspired to replay all sixteen tracks twice against the increasingly annoying opposition with just a different paint job and a massive spoiler added.Each character has some sassy dialogue and one-liners which they interject with and completing one of the four tiers of the career with them delivers an entertainingly melodramatic cut scene.Bite-sized amusing alternatives to the career mode are the single-race options, Cops and Robbers, and Drive or Explode. Little touches like this throughout the game help make the drivers feel like they have more of a personality.After several post-launch attempts to join in online Quick and Ranked matches, only one was successful. You can see that in the polygonal art style; it's simple, but it allows for vivid colours and an extremely clear image. It's unabashedly an arcade racer, with an emphasis on drifting and boosting to secure victory. cars and it would be a winner.As it is, there is some good multiplayer fun to be had here, and the nostalgia induced by the wonderful visuals will provide some short-lived fun for anyone who wants to relive the feel of the Sega arcade classics from the 80s and 90s.Hotshot Racing releases for PS4 on September 10, 2020.An authentic recreation of the best of the Sega arcade racing classics from yesteryear, but sadly lacking in depth due to the simplistic circuits and repetitive gameplay mechanic.
