I am not entirely sure what this book was about, and it seemed to just be a collection of stories about what happened when he was asleep and going on adventures with the two children. Welcome back.
I get that this story has some philosophical high points with subjects like religion, love and evolution but the story is awful. I especially liked the thing with Sylvie's magic necklace. But mostly, I wanted to finish it already. The work evolved from his short story "Bruno's Revenge," published in 1867 in Aunt Judy's Magazine. The story flipped back and forth between the life of a normal, middle-aged victorian man (who's point of view the story is told from) and his dream sequences. Some parts were exhausting and boring, others psychedelic and intriguing. Imagine all that insanity in a real world setting with horrendous transitions leaving you lost between the real world and dreams. I highly recommend this one for anyone with kids or that is a kid at heart. Boldly experimental, and arguably post-modern, Sylvie and Bruno was too far distant from any ordinary narrative to find much of an audience even at the height of Carroll’s popularity.
But there are so many boring passages to wade through and it is difficult to take Bruno’s ridiculous baby talk.
I know that this is supposed to be childrens literature for his time and I can respect that, but it was a bit hard for me to follow myself.This is an extraordinary book, and one clearly in need of a good editor.

It is hard not to laugh out loud throughout or to look at yourself and reflect on what you were and what you have become.As "Alice in Wonderland" is one of my favourite stories from childhood, I was really looking forward to this other novel by Lewis Carroll - and wasn't disappointed at all!
