The Circuit Paul Ricard is a French motorsport race track built in 1969 at Le Castellet, Var, near Marseille, with finance from pastis magnate Paul Ricard. Le Castellet first hosted the French Grand Prix in 1971. The GIP Grand Prix de France - Le Castellet supports the decisions taken by the French Government. The circuit has been part of the FIA Formula One since the 2018 Formula One World Championship as the French Grand Prix, previously serving in 1971, 1973, 1975-1976, 1978, 1980, 1982-1983, as well as from 1985 to 1990. Opened in April 1970, the permanent racetrack in Provence, the Circuit Paul Ricard, set new standards for track design with its layout and is one of the forerunners of the modern GP circuit. Ricard wanted to experience the challenge of building a racetrack. The response in France was a move to Le Castellet for the 1971 grand prix. The race was won by Tyrell driver Jackie Stewart. Le Castellet Grand Prix racing originated in France, and the French Grand Prix is the oldest of all GPs, having first run on 26 June 1906.
