She works in the Himawari (sunflower) old-folks’ home caring for the elderly and she cooks nice food for Sousuke. Later in the movie, she greets Fujimoto in his vessel, convincing him to allow their daughter to try to become human and reset the balance of nature. She is still young and energetic, missing her husband and getting angry when he doesn't keep his promises to come home, but she doesn't hold grudges.
Sosuke encourages her this time and she bounces back into a happy mood.
Not much is known about the relationship between the two, but Ponyo appears rather timid while meeting her mother at the end of the film, and claims that although she is a beautiful woman, she can be very frightening. The candle runs out, and Ponyo is unable to make the new one bigger again. Toki, one of the elders, calls Sosuke over and tells him not to trust Fujimoto.
