This poem has been stuck in my head since college - several decades ago, and I sought out analyses becuase I think it's finally making sense to me. A compelling poem, which is actually about poverty-old clothes, 'last month's newspapers', 'the dresser of deal'. He takes from the cheap, once fancier, dresser a sheet on which the dead woman embroidered fantails once. There is some kind of celebration occurring. (Someone go up to the dresser-the one missing the knobs-and bring down some of her linen, the sheets with the birds embroidered on it. The second stanza presents the funeral of a poor woman.
