The first recorded use of natural resources for transportation, food supplies, and recreation in Thunder Bay was by indigenous people over 3,000 years ago. The cold, fresh waters of Lake Huron have provided a favorable environment for shipwreck preservation, although waves and ice have damaged some shallow wrecks.
