In a way, I liked it more than Shrek, because of the fact that it was less 'polished' and maybe more British. Ella learns that the "gift" is actually a curse, in which she must obey any order or command that is given to her. On her adventures, she meets a kindly elf named Slannen and, aided by Char, outwits and captures bloodthirsty ogres. Ella is under a spell to be constantly obedient, a fact she must hide from her new stepfamily in order to protect the prince of the land, her friend for whom she's falling. Judging from this alone, the prince can be viewed as someone whose character runs deeper than the good looks every other girl in the kingdom is admiring. I was very happy to see Eric Idle was the narrator and Anne Hathaway was brilliant and instantly likable as Ella, with Hugh Dancy the perfect handsome prince.
