"It was the last movie Flynn made for Warner Bros in Hollywood for that studio, where he had started out in 1935. Then he'd gone on set and be stoned.
Like the character that he plays, Errol Flynn was on his way down by the time that he cast in this adequate potboiler.
Exhausted from his flight, he is caught near the church steps by Senor Ortega, the brother of the man aboard the PT boat who had originally taken the cross for safekeeping from the invading Japanese.

Was this review helpful? Warner Bros. MARA MARU (1952) is a fairly forgotten, generally disliked and disregarded Errol Flynn vehicle.
Mason hires him, both for protection from whomever had killed Callahan and help finding his partner's killer. He still had about 7 years more of making films in him before his early death at age 50. I don't know if this is true or not,but I am told that when this movie came out, the distributors took it to Tokyo to show, because by that time there was a fairly large demand for American movies in Japan...particularly action movies, and even more so those which featured well known stars like Errol Flynn, and were confident that it would be well received and quite profitable...but that even though the movie was given wide advertising and multiple screens all over Japan,nobody came to see it due to the fact that "Mara Maru" translates into Japanese as "Sh*t Boat"....and who in their right mind would want to see a movie with the title "Sh*t Boat"?? Mason and Benedict have a brutal hand-to-hand showdown, with Mason prevailing. Yes, Errol Flynn looks more than his 43 years here...but not that much more...more like 48. 17 out of 18 found this helpful. Benedict has discovered it had been aboard a PT boat Mason had commanded, with Callahan serving as his Executive Officer. 4.5 out of 5 stars. Sydney opening at the Park (ran 2 weeks). It's the kind of a film that studios were giving stars to satisfy whatever commitments were still under contract. Of course, a capable stunt man probably wore the helmet and suit for the deep sea diving scenes, but Douglas does a good job of inserting close-ups of Flynn in the helmet into the action.

Gregory Mason and Andy Callahan are partners in a post-World War II salvage business in Mason is arrested but released after Steven Ranier, a private investigator who had been working for Callahan, comes forward and clears him, saying he witnessed Callahan's murder. A storm hits and the three men fight over the crucifix while Mason's dive assistant Manuelo beaches the ship at his direction. Although the star still had to do "The Master of Ballintrae" the following year in England to finish out his Warner contract MARA MARU was his last Hollywood film for them (He made a brief return to the studio in 1958 for the John Barrymore biopic "Too Much Too Soon"). 0 out of 0 found this helpful. Flynn fans will have a ball with this one. Director Gordon Douglas doesn't let the action get water-logged for a moment, and "Mara Maru" is an entertaining epic even though it doesn't have any major surprises in it. In a confrontation between Mason and Manuelo over the religious artifact, Mason's greed causes him to beat the young man when the devout Catholic insists the cross be returned. When she leaves, Demetrius tells you that Maru is a good kid and his 'special little girl', and he wouldn't want anything getting in the way of her bright future. Still carrying a torch, she tells Mason this and begs him again to give up the expedition and return with her to a normal life in the United States; once again he insists on continuing.
It was also buoyed by an adroit score by the studio's Max Steiner and the whole thing had workmanlike direction by the busy Gordon Douglas. It turns out to be a diamond encrusted crucifix from a Catholic cathedral in Manila that has played a significant role in the movie, both spiritual and as part of the mystery of the trail of murders leading towards the treasure.
